Communities that are bicycle and pedestrian active are almost always cleaner, greener, more sustainable and healthier.”

Thanks to more than 800 cyclists the combined GreenTour Bicycle Ride(s) and The Classic Criterium Cycling Race(s) have made our event one of the largest and most successful cycling events in the Metro Atlanta and in Georgia. We hope everyone who participated will join us again in 2007 as we move the event into the Springs where we hope to make it a permanent fixture. Stay turned for a specific date.

The GreenTour is the premier event of the Sandy Springs Bicycle & Pedestrian Community Initiative. It’s a bicycle event intended to generate greater awareness about the value of creating a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly environment in Sandy Springs – with connectivity to Atlanta, Cobb County, Dekalb County, Roswell and other bicycle paths that connect to schools, parks, business centers and activity centers.

The Sandy Springs Bicycle & Pedestrian-Friendly Community Initiative strives to:

Support the building of infrastructure and activities that promote fitness
  • Create greater awareness about the benefits of a bicycle & pedestrian-friendly community.
  • Support connectivity to parks, schools, business districts and other destinations.
  • Promote the use of alternative transportation.
  • Promote a healthier environment through support of clean transportation alternatives.
  • Create cycling activities for all levels of cyclists.

“The GreenTour is more than just a bicycle event is part of a journey toward a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly environment, which is just one aspect of a healthy community,” says Ron Comacho, Co-Executive Director. “The new bike and pedestrian initiative will provide transportation choices, that had been largely ignored by local Transportation planners,” adds Bill Cleveland, the other Co-Executive Director.

Like many bike and pedestrian organizations, the Bicycle & Pedestrian-Friendly Community Initiative will be actively promoting the design and implementation of an integrated, comprehensive, and community wide Bike & Pedestrian Network in Sandy Springs with The Green Tour as one catalyst for awareness as well as a fun recreational event.

“Working with cycling oriented businesses and their teams, such as CycleWorks and the CycleWorks Cycling Team, we hope to add a Crit to the mix of the larger GreenTour and Bike-Ped activities in Sandy Springs” says Lisa Wearing, Marketing Advisor to the Sandy Springs Bike-Ped Initiative. Stay tuned for this announcement.

“The type of Transportation System that we build in Sandy Springs has the potential to promote or undermine the health of our community,” adds Alan Bragman, avid cyclist and a local Chiropractor working on the Bike-Ped Initiative.

Recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) medical research makes a link between the lack of pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure and the promotion of sedentary lifestyle patterns that underpin existing local disease patterns.
